Ingredients

For the Fish

  • 4 filets fish filets (such as cod or tilapia) Choose fresh filets for the best flavor.
  • 1 cup flour For dredging the fish.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Panko breadcrumbs can be used for extra crunch.
  • 2 large eggs Beaten for the breading process.
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Assembly

  • 4 buns sandwich buns Soft, pillowy buns are recommended.
  • Cheese (your choice, such as cheddar or Swiss) Optional for added flavor.
  • Lettuce Fresh leaves for crunch.
  • Tomato slices Fresh, ripe tomatoes are best.
  • Homemade tartar sauce Made from mayonnaise, pickles, lemon juice, salt.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Pat the fish filets dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  • In one bowl, mix flour with salt and pepper. In a second bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.

Breading the Fish

  • Dredge each fish filet in the flour mixture until fully coated.
  • Dip the coated filet into the beaten eggs, allowing excess to drip off.
  • Finally, coat the filet with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.

Cooking

  • Heat half an inch of oil in a large skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully place the breaded fish filets into the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Transfer cooked filets to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Assembly

  • Assemble the sandwich using the soft buns: place a fried filet on the bottom bun, add a slice of cheese, fresh lettuce, and tomato.
  • Drizzle with homemade tartar sauce before closing with the top bun.

Serving

  • Serve the sandwiches warm, optionally with a side of fries or a light salad.

Notes

For an extra crispy coating, consider double-dipping your fish in flour and breadcrumbs. Store any leftovers separately and reheat the fish in the oven for maximum crispiness.
